Part 3

The research that I conducted in order to further my previous thoughts about political polarization proved to be useful in furthering the validity of my own experiences. My main aspect of the research that assisted me with providing information towards this societal dilemma was the survey that I created. This survey gave me primary insight into how one community in society was feeling about this issue of polarization. The results very much surprised me, with many people not identifying with a party and still believing that there is polarization in society and distrust/dislike other parties. However, I do wish that my sample size could be exponentially bigger so my results could be more credible, taking in other students from other universities or people in different areas on a national scale. I learned more about the root of the issue while I looked into documents from the beginning of the political parties, supporting the fact that polarization isn’t just a modern issue but one that has been going on since the late 1700s. It also became evident to me that a lot of political divides that happen between citizens originate from the politicians. One of the sources informed me that much of the polarization we witness amongst ourselves first comes from the influence of those in higher political positions. The divide that is seen within politicians directly translates to the divide that is evident within the general population. I also found how Narrative Medicine and the topics of “Looping Effects” and “Single Stories” played a direct part in how polarization has evolved throughout the years. The looping effect provides a name to the phenomena that causes this polarization and single stories can give rise to unknowingness about a certain subject, further leading to conflict. Throughout this research project, I was able to extend the knowledge that I had already known, as well as affirm what I had initially thought about the problem of polarization in the United States.
